Similar to the rest of the range, the manual and automatic versions are powered by a vigorous 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that provides a remarkable fuel economy. According to Suzuki, the S-Presso burns 4.9 L/100km and has low CO2 emissions of 118g/km.

Despite the low price, S-Presso buyers receive ABS brakes, dual front airbags, and AC as standard. A two-year/30 000 km service plan is definitely the highlight of the package, along with a five-year/200 000 km warranty.

  1. The Mahindra KUV100 – R158 999

The Indian carmaker is one of South Africa’s fastest growing brands. The Mahindra KUV100 is one of the most economical cars on our list and is also a cute compact crossover, which some may find quite appealing. With the very basics, including AC, ABS, dual front airbags, and roof rails; the KUV100 has all the basics you need. 

An entry-level model is powered by a 61 kW three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine. 

The KUV100 does not come standard with a service plan, but includes a three-year/100 000 km vehicle warranty and a five-year/150 000 km warranty.

With ABS, dual front airbags, AC, Bluetooth/USB/AUX functionality, remote central locking, rear PDC, and an onboard computer display; the Renault Kwid is a real go-getter for its price.

The Kwid’s three-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine punches out 50kW with a five-speed manual transmission.

Renault claims it only uses about 4.7 L/100 km and has a range of 596 km on its 28-litre petrol tank.

The Kwid has a five-year warranty and one-year of full coverage insurance. This is a perfect first-time car, especially for students.

  1. The Suzuki Celerio – R178 900

Suzuki is really bringing its A-game to the best-car-deal-battle. This little hatchback is also the most appealing car on the list. The all-new Celerio hatchback, which is 130 mm longer than the S-Presso offers more function and space.

The Suzuki Celerio is one of Suzuki's brand new models that came out this year and features new engine tech and specs! The Celerio’s powertrain features new Dualjet engine technology. A 49kW three-cylinder petrol engine is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Suzuki claims the Celerio will need a bare 4.4 L to travel 100 km. This gives the hatchback an amazing range just shy of 800 km on its 35-litre petrol tank. 

The Suzuki Celerio comes standard with AC and rear parking sensors, but does not feature electric windows or a radio in the basic model. It does, however, include dual front airbags and ABS.
