South Africa's Vehicle Sales Report: New and Used Car Trends for April 2026
South Africa's automotive market recorded another strong month during April 2026, with growth in both passenger vehicle and light commercial vehicle sales, while the used vehicle market continued to demonstrate healthy consumer demand.
New Vehicle Sales Continue Growing
A total of 47,978 new vehicles were sold during April 2026.
The majority of these sales (91.1%) were completed through dealerships, while:
· 5.1% were sold to the rental industry.
· 2.2% were delivered to corporate fleets.
· 1.6% were sold to government departments.
Passenger vehicle sales reached 34,414 units, representing 14.3% year-on-year growth, while light commercial vehicles increased by 9.7% to 10,966 units. Vehicle exports, however, declined by 4% compared to the same period last year.

The country's top-selling vehicle brands during April 2026 were:

Used Vehicle Market Remains Strong
The used vehicle market continued to perform well, with an average vehicle age of 4 years and 8 months.
Among the best-selling used vehicle derivatives were:

· Chery Tiggo Cross 1.5 CVT
· Volkswagen Polo Vivo 1.4 Trendline
· Chery Tiggo 4 Pro
· Jetour Dashing 1.5T Deluxe
· Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi XL Double Cab
Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen, Suzuki and BMW remained the five strongest-performing brands in the used vehicle market. Meanwhile, the Ford Ranger and Nissan NP200 continued to dominate the used commercial vehicle segment.
